For a long time, foreign manufacturers from the United States and Japan have dominated the global flame retardant market with their advantages in technology, capital and product types. China flame retardant industry started late and has been playing the role of catcher. Since 2006, it developed rapidely.
In 2019, the global flame retardant market was about 7.2 billion USD, with relatively stable development. Asia Pacific region has shown the fastest growth. The consumption focus is also gradually shifting to Asia, and the main increment comes from the Chinese market. In 2019, China FR market increased by 7.7% every year. FRs are mainly used in wire and cable, household appliances, automobiles and other fields. With the development of polymer materials and the expansion of application fields, FRs are widely used in various fields such as chemical building materials, electronic appliances, transportation, aerospace, furniture, interior decoration, clothing, food, housing and transportation. It has become the second largest polymer material modification additive after plasticizer.
In recent years, the consumption structure of FRs in China has been continuously adjusted and upgraded. The demand of ultra-fine aluminum hydroxide flame retardants has shown a rapid growth trend, and the market share of organic halogen flame retardants has gradually decreased. Before 2006, the domestic FRs were mainly organic halogen flame retardants, and the output of inorganic and organic phosphorus flame retardants(OPFRs) accounted for a small proportion. In 2006, China's ultra-fine aluminum hydroxide (ATH) flame retardant and magnesium hydroxide flame retardant accounted for less than 10% of the total consumption. By 2019, this proportion has increased significantly. The structure of the domestic flame retardant market has gradually changed from organic halogen flame retardants to inorganic and OPFRs, supplemented by organic halogen flame retardants. At present, brominated flame retardants(BFRs) are still dominant in many application fields, but phosphorus flame retardants (PFR) are accelerating to replace BFRs due to environmental protection considerations.
Except for 2017, the market demand for flame retardants in China showed a sustained and stable growth trend. In 2019, the market demand for flame retardants in China was 8.24 million tons, with a year-on-year increase of 7.7%. With the rapid development of downstream application markets (such as household appliances and furniture) and the enhancement of fire prevention awareness, the demand for FRs will further increase. It is expected that by 2025, the demand for flame retardants in China will be 1.28 million tons, and the compound growth rate from 2019 to 2025 is expected to reach 7.62%.
